How-To: Change Door Pins and Bushings GMT800.

I recently changed the pins and bushings on the D.S. door of my truck (2000 ecsb). I made a tool, that made driving the old pins out real easy, and no risk of bending the brackets.

The door is easily removed, 3 bolts and the wiring. Use something to protect the interior from grinder debris (old pins require ginding off some material). I used cardboard.

I made this from 2" sq. tube, notched 3 sides(in this pic it's the sides and top)

I drilled and tapped the bottom to allow for a piece of redi-rod (didn't have the right bolt)

The tool slips over the bracket, and the bolt(redi-rod) will drive out he old pin.

I bought the dealer pins, expensive but so much better than the jobber option, if not for

anything other than installation, most jobber pins have to be pressed through the bracket, then held in by an 'e' clip.

The General has a threaded stud on he underside of the pin, and a nut is used to pull the pin into the bracket.

No bending the bracket!!

I have for quite a while supplied Total Automotive's Hinge kits in my store to customers. They are by far the best aftermarket kits available no matter the vehicle.

 

 

 

Pins are stainless steel as are the nut and washer. The bracket can be ordered painted or non-painted. They also, sell a tool that works just like the one you made. And they will give you a 12mo warranty on the parts if you but the tool because it won't distort your bracket on the truck.

What's funny is Total Automotive has a video suggesting that you use cardboard as a protective device.
